February 14 is a day where many people around the world give candy, flowers and gifts to their loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine.  The history of Valentine’s Day and the story of Saint Valentine is still a mystery. There is many stories of Saint Valentine. One of the stories says that he sent the first “valentine” when he was imprisoned. He fell in love with his jailers daughter. He handed her a letter before his death. He ended it with an expression that is still used today, “from your Valentine”.  Saint Valentine is known for his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and most importantly his romantic figure.  Valentine’s Day wasn’t always a day of romance. It was just a day to honor saint valentine. There is another story that says that valentine was a bishop who held secret marriage ceremonies of soldiers in opposition to Claudius 11 who had prohibited marriage for young men and was executed by the latter. Whenever lovers thought of marrying, they went to Valentine and met them  in a secret place and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony.  He secretly preformed marriages to many lovers. Claudius found out about this and had him arrested. Later he sent an order to execute Valentine. He fell in love with a girl and wrote her a letter like I mentioned before. But it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. The oldest “valentine” still exists today. It was a poem written by Charles, duke of Orleans. He wrote it in 1415 for his wife while he was imprisoned.  Today Valentine’s Day is the second largest card sending holiday of the year. Each year on February the 14, millions across the world present their love ones with candy, flowers, chocolates and other lovely gifts. In many countries, restaurants are seen to be filled with couples who celebrate their relationships.
